Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser) returns to The Mummy franchise for a third outing; set this time in ancient China, amid the freezing Himalayas, where he faces a newly-resurrected mummy: Han Emperor (Jet Li). Joining Rick for another adventure is his son Alex (Luke Ford), wife Evelyn (now played by Maria Bello), and Evelyn’s bumbling brother Jonathan (John Hannah).

The story begins with Alex O’Connell, a young archaeologist, who is tricked into awakening the Dragon Emperor from a 2,000 year-long slumber. When the undead mummy arises, Alex races to his parents for help, the only people he know who have defeated armies of the undead.

The Mummy, now resurrected and having fully regained his former power, renews his quest for world-domination by first attempting to bring back to life is army. Only the O’Connells dare stand in his way.

A married couple move into a new house that they come to think is haunted by an evil spirit. The woman, Katie, has been plagued by a spirit since her childhood. In a bid to capture evidence of the haunting, they setup video surveillance cameras around the house, filming while they are asleep. Their surveillance footage has been edited into the feature movie, Paranormal Activity.

Demons aim to conquer humanity so Hell Boy and his gang return to save the day. A simple enough premise but I’m sure we’re in for another stylish rendition of a comic book great. As upcoming horror movies go this is a must-see. While the first outing, Hell Boy (2004), was overall very good, the buzz on Hellboy 2: The Golden Army is that we’re in for an even bigger treat.

I grew up during the video nasty era. When the theater lights dim on Zombie Strippers - and the title is flamboyantly splashed in red across a black canvass - I’m instantly transported back to a time when gross-out cinema was all the rage. So I suggest this: Go to Zombie Strippers expecting an experience along the lines of Evil Dead, not something as studio-birthed or polished as, say, I Know What You Did Last Summer! Do that and you’ll have a ball (just don’t go touching those nasty pool balls!).

It is the future and President Bush is at war with half the globe (no, it’s not present day, I’m telling you it’s the future). In a secret government lab a diabolical vaccine is created to transform soldiers into zombies; mindless puppets who feel no pain, who are not daunted by fear or stopped by death. The test subjects happen to be society’s garbage: the homeless, hookers, the middle class. When scientists are slaughtered during a break-out attempt a special forces unit is dispatched. This is when things start to go wrong. A soldier becomes infected and flees his kill-happy comrades to a discreet little strip joint across the road. Said soldier eats out the throat of the hottest stripper you’ve ever laid eyeballs on, Jenna Jameson, who then becomes an even better stripper in zombie-death. A hotbed of jealousy and rivalry among the strippers compels an exodus from humanity to zombiehood and we soon have a dozen smoking zombie strippers who can strip like never before. The real fun begins (as if our hearts can take any more!) when the strippers get hungry . . .

Zombie Strippers is succulent food for horror fans. By that I mean non-horror fans are going to have a difficult time swallowing this flick. You have to appreciate the taste of video nasties. Sometimes the acting is poor or downright corny. Great! At times we can almost sense a film crew standing at the side-lines stifling giggles or literally pissing themselves. Awesome! Just when the gore level goes beyond obscene, we see it cranked up another couple of notches. We like, nay, we love! And then, just when we least expect it, a comedic moment that would rival the greats of modern cinema is introduced (pool balls . . . that’s all I’m gonna say).

Robert Englund is, typically, fantastic in his role as owner and proprietor of the strip bar. While Jenna Jameson may not be collecting a Oscar any time soon, her smoking-hot stripping will forever be branded to my retina. Jay Lee, who’s last directorial gore flick was The Slaughter, is certainly a filmmaker to watch in the future. The ensemble cast of strippers and soldiers (including one very hot soldier firing her gun in but a bra . . . can we say jiggle jiggle?) is perfect. You actually believe they’re the real deal. In fact I’m sure I had a lap dance from one last summer.

If you loved Planet Terror, you’ll love Zombie Strippers.

Lia is a graduate student at Cambridge University. Intent on finding a good story for the college newspaper she learns of a Virtual Reality suit arriving from Cal Tech, California. They intend to connect it to the Z93: the world’s most powerful computer.

Dr Joshua Mathers, the lead scientist from Cal Tech, is met by Lia at the station, where they encounter and instant attraction. The Cambridge scientists are led by Dr Victor Neuman - who idolises famous occultist, Aleister Crowley, whose black magic ceremonies he has programmed into the Z93

Dr Neuman believes the suit is the perfect medium to connect the programming with the human brain. In secret he has generated a chaos equation to make the suit intelligent.

Dr Oliver Haddo, a classics lecturer, is the man who will wear the suit. When he does so he is assaulted by millions of occult images and flees the lab a changed man. The dead occultist, Crowley, has been resurrected inside Haddo.

In a wild attempt to raise himself into his own body, Crowley must perform the Chemical Wedding, an ancient ceremony that puts Lia’s life in danger.

A reality TV show arrives in a small town where a serial killer is on the rampage, documenting his kills in increasingly grisly snuff movies. The cast and crew of the show become the hunted in this fun, disturbing, often gut-spillingly (sorry) comic look at the slasher concept.

American Zombie documents the lives of a community of zombies living in Los Angeles; directed by Grace Lee, who plays herself. We follow the lives of four characters - Joel, the founder of Zombie Advocacy Group; a convenience store clerk; Lisa, a funeral florist; and Judy, in zombie-denial, searching for romance. The movie is at times an engaging social commentary but more often than not slips into sensationalist mockumentary, comedic mode.

Danielle is a psychology student who rents a Victorian house, where she hopes to rebuild her life. She, unwittingly, awakens a spirit of purest evil: Edgar Crowe, a crazed child killer. Her sister, Anna, thinks she’s lost her mind. Danielle attempts to prove her sanity by documenting the haunting but it - naturally, folks - goes horribly wrong. The dead killer channels himself through Danielle who becomes hungry to satisfy an appetite for torturing and killing boys in the “Panic Chair.” Anna must now try to kill Crowe and not her sister.

Overall a very watchable movie by Brett Sullivan, director of Ginger Snaps: Unleashed.

Fans of the original horror classic, Lost Boys, have waited 21 years for a sequel. Will it live up to our hopes (and not our expectations)? I truly hope so. Both Corey Feldman and Corey Haim reprise their original roles and the script, says Feldman, “is very close and very true to the structure of the original film — same kind of scares, same kind of laughs, same kind of relationships.” The action takes place in Luna Bay, California, where Chris Emerson (Hilgenbrink) and his younger sister, Nicole (Reeser), must face a group of vampire surfers, aided by the Frog Brothers.
